To many factors to be measured in please ask your Gyno. If you are drinking, dieting under stress all these things and others can change how your period comes and goes.
Periods are different for every woman. Some girls start menstruation when they're 9 or 10; some in their late teens. The length of the cycle also varies. Some periods last longer than 28 days, some shorter. If you have just begun your menstruation, your body will need time to regulate itself to these changes. Your periods might be a bit erratic at first. You may have two cycles in one month and miss having one the next month. How long your period lasts also varies . Some girls have their periods for only 3 or 4 days, others as long as a week. The menstrual flow of blood can vary from woman to woman also.

Yes, it's very common for women to be irregular. And, being off by a couple of days or even a week is actually good. The women that I know who are irregular will miss their period some months, or get it twice other months.
As an added note, it amazes me how many men are answering this question. What in the world would you guys know about this??

I have had this problem. My doctor has said that normally women don't have their periods every 28 days... Some women can go to every 6 wks. You should keep track of long is your period & the length between each & speak to your doctor. Make sure you get a yearly eack year.

Age 12 seems normal
I'm not a girl, but I do think that periods sometimes delay
best thing to do is confront a doctor about this.

My goodness you are already 20 years old and you should know. Yes that happens. They call it irregular menstrual cycle. Other people even get irregular cycle for up to how many months (it is called amenorrhea.) If that happens it is best to see your gynecologist. Also have a regular pap smear test.

Guess what; this may be what is "normal" for you...I have been having periods for decades and I can only guess in a general sort of middle of the month(or whenever it is most inconvenient) kinda way...just part of the many joys of being a woman!

Many women have irregular menstrual cycles, and I am one of them. Lots of things can influence your cycle (body weight and amount of exercise, for example). I talked to my gynecologist about it, and she said it is generally not a problem unless you skip more than 3 months. If it is troublesome, your doc can prescribe birth control so that your period comes at a regular time. So best bet is to see your gynecologist.

Irregular periods aren’t unusual – they affect about 30% of women in their reproductive years
Irregular menstrual periods are usually the result of hormonal signals that have been thrown out of sync. In order to produce a period, your body makes hormones, like estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are kept in the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovaries inside your body. In order to trigger ovulation and menstruation, these parts of the body need to send signals to one another. Sometimes, these signals get crossed or skipped, causing irregular periods.
