Like others have answered, DVR's are great. However, TiVo has filed a suit against all the companies who have sold DVR's, claiming that DVR's (digital video recorders) were patented by TiVo. So I wouldn't buy one just yet, but look out for the result of this case so you don't get into a potentially messy situation.

get the cox DVR its like tivo only w/ cox cable and a sweet menu and its like 39457345 times better

tivo sucks. just order a dvr through your cable company. we have ours through adelphia (now time warner) and it is awesome. i don't know how i lived without it! (and it's only like $15 more per month. well worth it!)

Many cable and satellite companies offer their transmitter boxes with DVR capability.

Buy a DVD player with DVD recorder. Then you can record television on DVD kinda like recording on VCR but much more technologically advanced.
