1 cor 13
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I can only answer for myself
. I met my future partner Gwenneth at the office. I was looking for someone with similar interests to be a friend. Our immediate shared likes were classical music, Gilbert and Sullivan and gardening. We went to the occasional concert or show and helped in our families gardens. After evening outings we shared a goodnight kiss. This gradually became more serious until Gwen asked for a talk, the concern being should we just remain friends or keep on in the way we seemed to be going. Thank heaven we chose the latter. We carefully considered our options and purchased a house. My mother when I told her said that she always hoped for grandchildren some day but Gwen was a lovely person so treat eaach other kindly and be happy. Gwen's family were filled with horrid resentment. Gwen's serene facing of the hatred was a further strength in our love.
They say the course of love never runs smooth. in later years I took long leave with gwen's blessing as she "felt tired'.Returning I found that she had passssed away with a virulent cancer. Her family had claimed her remains and buried them in their church's private plot; her stone bearing only date of birth and "UNKNOWN TO GOD".
i believe that it was only the love remaining that stopped me from striking the vile people. I eventually sought help and am recovering after treatment. I am sure that Gwen might have forgiven them but with a waspish remark to rub in their faces. I still lean on that strength but cannot forgive as yet.
What is true love for you, TRUST and shared joy I hope.
May your life be happy, Rose P.

True love is when you would sacrifice your life, your every last comfort, your reputation; everything, infact, just to make him/her a little happier. [1]
True love is *not* many other things; learn to recognize them, and be happier as a consequence. [2]

There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me and that is the word LOVE itself holds the answer.......
(L)isten: and validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.
