I do alot of work with my hands. I am a aviation mechanic, I have notice my left hand was swollen for 3 days and painful.
I do work with chemicals, but I wash my hands alot and used chemical gloves.
I had broken my middle finger and wrist (not all in the same time) but that was 2 and 4 years ago. What do you all think?

I also have very rough hands that can scrach my wife up. I use all kinds of hand lotions but with little or no affects. Any good hand lotion you all can think of?

I'm no doctor but you might try doing a parafin hand wax treatment. Most manicurist have them in their shops or you can purchase one at Wal-Mart, KMart...etc.
The wax is great for blood flow and smoothing rough hands, feet, elbows..etc.
I'm sure your wife will like it too.
Best of luck and I would see a Dr about the swelling.....just to be safe. Speaking of safe....talk to your super at work about the hand to be able to use workmans comp if necessary.

As for the swelling, you might want to get an x-ray to check the old fractures. See your doc.

For softening, it's more non-medical, so I don't mind putting my 2 cents in. I think the lotion is not working because you have to get some of the dead skin off before it will soak in. If your wife has exfoliating creams and a pumas stone, go for it.

A home made exfoliating scrub is simple to make. Put a little sugar in your Palm, and pour in some lemon juice, rub it all over, and into your hands. The grainy texture of the sugar and the acid from the lemon juice will help. Then wash your hands, and apply lotion. A good over night lotion is plain old Vaseline jelly. As long as you keep working at it, your hands will soften over time.

I will tell you a trick for making them less rough. My father is a mechanic and does this. When washing your hands pour some course salt or granulated sugar in your hand with the soap. Rub vigorously. After a while of doing this it will exfoliates the dead, rough, skin from your hands. Using a strong lotion, like Gold Bond will help with the softening.
My dad also uses butter to remove the grease from his hands. (Uses a big handful of it to clean off the grease before using the sugar/salt.) The oils in the butter helps a lot with getting the stains from his hands and softening the skin.
I have heard soaking hands in olive oil is good too, but never tried it.

Make sure you never use anti-bacterial soap because this will cause your hands and fingers to crack open, or swell if you wash your hands a lot. Anti-bacterial soap kills both the good and bad bacteria and can even cause you to get sick. Also, many people are alergic to it. If you are using another kind of soap, switch right away. Try using a cortisone cream and use a good healing lotion for chapped skin. Don't use lotions with a lot of perfume. Baby lotion is a good one.

I know this stuff is really thick but it is good. Buy some alum and put it on your hands and if you can put some thin cotton gloves on them at night to get your hands off to a good start. I think you will start to see a difference. They also have utter balm for cows that works very well also. The alum is used on scars to soften and help them to look better. Lotion will not work. If you have calais, you can buy one of those heel files to get some of the really hard stuff off first. Good luck!

You could try using Vaseline on your hands at bedtime but cover them with woollen gloves. It is pretty warm for wool this time of year, but you could try lighter ones, but for some reason, wool makes the best effect for the skin. You may have to repeat that process for awhile, until your skin heals. I guess weekends off would be best. Good luck.

For dry skin would look for something with glycerine in it. For the swollen hand and pain I would suggest to see a doctor.
Good Luck!
