Colour is working fine, and the ink cartridge is in tight.
I've done the cleaning and nozzle check. It is only black ink that is the problem. If I try to print a document containing all black it just spits the paper out without even trying to print it.
What could be going wrong?

It's probably the print head. Canon printers have a "permanent" print head that isn't replaced with the ink cartridges. They generally don't last much more than a few years. Black is the most commonly used ink, so it seems likely. Replacement print heads can be ordered from Canon. You can often replace the printer and get a whole new set of ink cartridges included for about the same price though... and take advantage of newer technology...

Could be a glitch in the printer driver or Windows... Will probably turn out to be the print head. Installing the printer on another computer using just the basic drivers is a good test to be sure.

Canon inks are pretty good about not clogging or drying up. If you've been running cleaning cycles with no ink coming out... The print head has probably been damaged anyway. The ink flowing through the print head cools it by carrying away heat and conducting it to other parts. Attempting to print with a dry or badly clogged ink cartridge will quickly damage the print head.

Im still a Canon fan. Excellent results and trouble-free operation until they die. I just don't spend too much when choosing one. I stay away from the all-in-one units (everything worthless when printer dies). I don't expect them to last more than a few years. The print heads will last much longer if you stay away from any ink that isn't genuine Canon.

Could the black ink cartridge be old? Every now and then I run across one that is dried up.

You say it just spits the paper out without trying to print it. If it doesn't move the heads back and forth, it's not that the ink has dried up or run out. It means there is something wrong with the cartidge or it's not the right cartridge for the printer.

Your black ink is empty. It drys up if you don't use it. So you either run out of ink or it drys up. That's sucks don't it!!!!
