Yes.

I define "know" as memory that allows response to a stimulus. A machine has memory, whether its mechanical or electronic, and can therefore know something. That a machine cannot reason, expand what it knows without help, or be conscious of what it knows is immaterial. It's like a cockroach. You can cut it's head off, but the body continues with life functions (except eating) until it starves to death. It's body "knows".

Mechanical memory is the most common. Step on the gas pedal (stimulus), and the car knows to accelerate (response). It's knowledge is stored in the mechanical connections within the car. Electronic memory is sexier, but is essentially the same thing, a prearranged physical reaction of electrons that allow a machine to know how to react to a stimulus. The human brain is pretty much the same thing, just more complex. It also relies on physical and chemical reactions to allow a stimulus to invoke a response.

So a machine, even if not conscious or sentient, does have knowledge.

No. a machine can never know. even the best robots and chess playing machines work only according a set formula. science is too far away from duplicating human capabilities. but dont take chances - dont tell everything to a machine - it can record and retain n that could be risky. also a machine can never know that u r in love.

Because machines aren't concious, they cannot technically "know" something. They can contain a series of 1's and 0's that can be outputted for a human to understand, but all that is is binary code stored for human reference.

However, I guess you could also say that if a machine recalls this information to influence its next move, that is sort of like thinking. But because it was developed by man's hands and not nature, it will never have life.

Now if man manipulates nature to create life, thats a different story.
