I'd come flat out and ask her what she thinks these conversations mean and have "the talk" about predators an safety. Hope all is well.

What will an IP address do? Contact? How old is your daughter don't let her go meet anyone unless well I don't even want to use the word unless. If your daughter is going to meet someone what will an IP address do? I would contact the police or investigate more. Becareful after thinking I found out why you might want to know the Ip address but if she is attacked or kidnapped the IP address will only help you catch your daughters attacker.
I don't know what you should do not having kids. But I would be worried too.

Unless the guy has a very expensive dedicated DSL line the IP is dynamic and changes each time he logs on. The only IP you will be able to get is the ISP's.

Finding an IP address wont do anything, instead, if you are concnerned, I suggest getting a keylogger. It will track exactly what your daughter is saying, as well as what he is saying. There are many programs out here, here is one that I just quickly found for you.

Suspicious in what way? If you're concerned that your daughter might be in contact with a predator, you can contact your local police department. They should be able to direct you to a computer crimes unit who could investigate your suspicions.
Good luck.

Download a network sniffer then run the IP addresses through visualroute.visualware.com or whois.

I doubt you can. It's my understanding that all the messages go through the servers first, so you wouldn't see the other IP.

I would take away all IM's if she is abusing them. I recently did it and blocked AIM, Yahoo messenger and MSN messenger.
