I also have a 55 gallon tank. I use to have two large size Oscars but I got rid them and now I have a community tank. I would suggest gouramis. The kissing gouramis will get large and they are a lot of fun to watch. I also have two bala sharks they will grow to be very big, mine are only about five inches. But they are fun to watch too, they chase each other up and down the tank. Gouramis usually grow to be about 5 to 6 inches but the are semi aggressive fish. The kissing gourami will get to be about 11 inches and if you have live plants I would not recommend that you bye them. I enjoy the gouramis that I have

I'm partial to silver dollar tetras - they start off small, but eventually get to be about six inches each. It's best to keep them in groups of six or more.
If you have a dark substrate and subdued lighting, they will show the best coloring.
Although they're primarily herbivorous, mine go absolutely nuts anytime I put anything meat-based in the tank (usually when I try to feed the frogs). They can be shy, but will eventually come around. I've had mine about three months, and they're just starting to come to the surface for feedings.
EDIT for D: Pirahnas are members of the tetra family (believe it or not). I'm sure you're thinking about the pacu, which looks very much like the pirahna (in regards to size, coloring, etc), but it is primarily herbivorous.

If you like the active fish who love to eat, you could try a barracuda or a Pirana. I think it may be illegal to own a pirrana, I am not sure. The pirrana has a cousin that I know you can get. Does anyone know the name of the fish that I am talking about? I am not sure that you want any other fish in your tank though.

This might help you decide:
http://www.fishlore.com/TropicalFishProfiles.htm
http://www.fishlore.com/profile-bluegourami.htm - These fish are pretty and behave like bettas. The Dwarf Gourami, is more peaceful than the bule gourami.
Do you like fish with "wings" africanbutterfly fish.

Get 4 tinfoil barbs they stay in a school and get to be a good size also constantly moving. When they get big it's fun to watch them hit the top of the water when you feed. Watch out you will get wet if the top is up. I have them in one of my tanks.

I think fish that swim in schools are really cool to watch.
I like neon tetras but I don't know about saltwater.
