I am starting a light rock/alternative band and I want to have the sound that Nickelback has. I would appreciate any help, not any negative comments. I have a low voice and if I knew how to get the raspy, growl effect I would be fine.

The effect that Chad Kroeger creates is called "scratching" your voice.
Its actually not a reccommended technique, as it can severely hurt your vocal chords, but...if that's the sound you want, its the sound you want.
Um...basically...scream for a while.
Like...loudly. Really hardcore scream.
And then sing.
Your voice should be nice and scratchy.
And the pain is the result of your vocal chords being severely irritated and then used.

Your voice is unique to you. The sound of your voicecan not be altered, but you can do exercises to extend your range, as you get higher in the range, your voice will sound strained, but beware, this is how many singer get vocal nodes...this will ruin your career. As bad as this sounds, the quickest way to get a raspy voice is to smart smoking....it is a very sad but true statement that many people do this just to get a desired sound.

you need long hair and a big nose. im kidding :) his voice is very unique....i think it would be hard for you to replicate it. Just be yourself, dont worry about being like someone else. Im sure there is something special about the way you sing too!
