Egypt was isolated, peaceful, productive, had a protective [for the most part] pantheon of gods, stable ruling class [again, for the most part], agriculturally self sufficient as the Nile flooded on a regular basis, noted astronomers, skilled craftsmen and engineers....

Mesopotamia was in an almost constant state of war or threat of war, was invaded by/settled by/ a number of peoples, had a god of war as its chief god [although its pantheon had many beneficial gods too], agriculturally only marginally self sufficient-the soil the area was high in salt...so the irrigation canals had to be redug on a regular basis, the Tigris and Euphrates were unpredictable...they often flooded the region with catastrophic results., they were noted astronomers as well [ The Magi, magicians, originated here, some of the first written documents come from here,,,,they probably were among the first "civilizations" to develop writing, agriculture, metal working, beer, weaponry,and the "city" ..and were the first to develop a system of law that was "above" the word of the king....Hammurabi's code

Mesopotamia...Assyria, Babylonia..perhaps many hundreds of years before Egypt...developed many of the first "steps" of civilization....

Ancient Egyptian civilization began in the Nile delta region (where the Nine flows into the Medeterranian Sea).
Mesopotamia refers to the region of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (present day Iraq).
