If she's learning well to use a real cup and you're comfortable with the mess, by all means forget the sippy! They're only for mom and dad's convienence anyway; no reason any child ever actually has to drink from one.
I first offered my son a sippy at 4 mo. He figured it out pretty quick (a couple of days), but didn't drink much from it until he was probably 11 mo. By 15 mo he'd mastered a real cup which he immdiately prefered to the sippy. He's 16 mo and I still give the sippy with his meals, though, since otherwise he'd just make soup in his regular cup. :P lol

You can certainly skip the sippy cup altogether (as long as you don't mind the mess). The main reason I used a sippy was to avoid too much mess during meals when I wanted to give them more control over their drinks since I was eating, too. Sippies and straw cups have also come in handy for outings when they needed a quick drink of water.
My girls were able to drink from a regular cup (with help) starting around 6 months, but my older daughter didn't figure out a sippy until close to a year. My younger daughter figured out the sippy around 8-9 months, I think. (She used to crawl and "steal" her big sister's sippy of water off the table and drink from it until her shirt was soaking wet - LOL!)
Developmentally, there is no need to introduce a sippy -- it's just for the parents' convenience.

I think we started sippy cups at around 8 months. It took a long time(and lots of trail and error) to find a particular kind that worked for us. We ended up with the "Take ans Toss" kind made by the First Years. I agree that the sippy is more for the convenience of the parent. I think my son could definately master a regular cup at this point (20 months), but frankly, the thought never crossed my mind because he takes such pride in making messes at mealtimes that I can only imagine what he would do with it. Also, what about riding in the car? I would want to have a sippy cup in that case, too.

I'm going through the same thing!
My daughter is 9 mo and she doesn't like the sippy cup at all! I talked to her DR just two days ago about this.
Neva (my daughter) will use a straw or drink from a cup really well, but she doesn't drink but a sip or two from the sippy cup and she looses her attention on it.
I say you have a very smart daughter! My DR said that if by her 1year birthday she still won't use the sippy cup, then we can use a cup and straw for milk and juice.

I bought sippy cups for my son (Gerber brand) and they say babies can have sippy cups from 6 months, and drinking from a straw by 12 months. I wouldnt skip the sippy cup stage b/c if you are in the car and your babys thirsty, you cant just give her a cup, plus sippy cups can be spill proof. I give my son a sippy cup during theday and when he sits down for his meals i give him a drink from a regular cup. He is in a high chair so I expect there to be a mess, so thats when i try him on regular cups

My kids started a sippy cup around 10-12 months. I she manages well with a regular cup go for it! Perhaps only use the sippy cup when you are out with her and don't want her to get messy.

If your eight month old is drinking out of a cup good for her! when she gets older and more active you may want some sippy cups around, to prevent spills, but otherwise let her use the cup. My son started using a sippy cup around six months, and a regular cup around 14 or 15 months.

my son started actually drinking from a straw at 8 months... it shocked the heck out of us! he was also able to drink small sips from a cup around the same time, but at that time he couldn't get the hang of a sippy cup. not until closer to a year when he started doing the sippy cup. but actually a regular cup is better if the baby can do it... the swallow less air than with a straw or sippy and have less gas and indigestion, less burping, and less spitting up. but you will need to probably be able to use a sippy eventually for ease of portability (unless you're going to keep her on the bottle for a while). but it's not recommended to put anything other than milk or water in a bottle to prevent baby bottle tooth decay. but overall i think if she's ok with a cup and it's convenient for parents then why bother with a sippy at all? they were only created for parent's convenience anyway.

As soon as the kids were able to hold their own bottle. Sippy cups come in handy for those kids that are still learning to drink out of a regular cup. And also, there's less mess to clean up if you buy the ones that are spill proof.
