Grigory Perelman solved one of the great unsolved problems in mathematics, and his work has been backed up by many other experts around the world. He recently was awards a Fields medal and $1 million but turned them down and has yet to come forward.

It was a collective understanding of science. He obviously understands that the credit does not belong entirely to him. If he where to accept the prize, it would be at that moment that scientific exploration and discovery would be a moot point for him. I would rather marvel a person for a humanitarian contribution than for his lottery winnings. "Genius lasts forever"

because he understands that by taking that money he is basicaly saying it was all his idea and I believe he understands that it was the collective of everything that came up with that idea. we all do what were all ment to do. its the best way to live imo you can fight it but in the end your only fighting yourself. plus why does he need the money or award? He is trying to get people to think basicaly.
