Whats the history of the word "cronies"?

as in " here he comes with his cronies"

I think it came from a time where a renegade party called his minions cronies, for example, pirates. What time and where is what baffles me.

Goonies, goons, henchmen, Minions, etc. In olden times, it meant an acquintance.
