The children of past times knew nothing about sex and drugs. They also never knew the problems of the world that religions like Islam would cause. Maybe they were better off.

Kids aren't dumb, they just don't act smart! If you think back to the old days, say Laura Ingall days, those kids might not have been real book smart, but they could sure plow a field with a horse leading the plow, they knew how to cut wood, make a fire, have a conversation with their parents about anything.
You move to the 50 or 60's, the drugs started being made available and kids were getting high,(not to smart). They only knew how to play a guitar, read some poetry and stay high. Oh yeah, they started making babies younger too, (really not smart).
And now, 2006, kids are trying drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and sex before they get to middle school(Truly the dumbest thing I have ever heard). So you know how to hack into computers, again not a smart idea, you know where babies come from and you aren't afraid to give it a try, another really bad idea. They sit in front of video games that are vilolent and they are encouraged to kill people, they have gangs so they can be protected from the other gangs, which means a bunch of kids are killing another bunch of kids becuase they aren't the same race or they live on the wrong street.
Who is smarter...I hope the parents of kids now are smarter than their parents becuase we have a whole new set of problems.

It's all relative. There's so much more to know these days, and seems it will always be that way. Information is passed so quickly and kids, who are much better at absorbing new information now have 'virtually' instant access to all kinds of information. I have been very impressed with the amounts of 'data' some young kids have. Unfortunately, I can't say they actually make better judgements, they just seem to have more info. And just like the smarter ones keep seeming smarter, the dumber one keeps getting dumber. Thanks to Steve-O and the likes, there's a whole new bar to slither under for the newest generations.

I think kids are more street-smart and technology-savvy these days, but because college (and sometimes high school) was not a requirement for a good job years ago, middle school graduates had been taught much more in school than the average 13-year-old today. Nowadays, our schooling is stretched over 12-25 years, whereas it was more condensed 100 years ago.

Kids today are prematurely street smart. So called adult activites are shoved into the faces of kids at earlier andearlier ages. Childhood has been sexualized, and sex is used to promote all sorts of things to kids these days.

That is not good at all! Kids are loosing their childhood by being pushed into premature adolescene as young as fifth grade. That is so wrong.

Are kids "dumb", no, but they have been dumbed down by all the garbage shoved in their faces by the schools, media, and clueless parents who abdicated their authority when faced by their kid's first two year old temper tantrum.

Dumb, no. No dumber than their boomer parents were when they were between ten and eighteen. Every generation has its own problems.

Kids nowadays ACT dumber, but kids in the old days are more ignorant because they don't have the technology that we have today.

Kids now. Kids now have all kinds of modern conveniences.
In the old days, kids didn't have calculators, so they had to learn to do math. They didn't have computers, so they had to know the Dewey decimel system, and how to do research using books and magazines. They didn't have velcro, so they had to learn to tie their shoes. They didn't have big screen plasms TV's, so they learned how to read, play together in friendly competition, how to ride two wheel (one speed) bicycles. They had chores, so they learned to wash dishes (no dishwashers), do the laundry, do the ironing (no permanent press), wash windows, mow the grass (push mower/not gas powered), cook meals (no microwaves or premixed foods). They had after school jobs, so they learned how to take care of children(there were no daycares), mend clothes, work in the family store, make change (cash registers didn't tell you what the change was, just what the total was), do yardwork, drive a tractor, plant and harvest the crops (farming was a common occupation), milk the cows, gather eggs, sheer sheep. They also said "Yes, sir" and "No, sir." "Please and Thank you" (manners were in fashion back then, not the "aight, and other slurred slang of today). They went to Church, tried hard in school, and respected teachers. (Of course, that was when you were allowed to pray in school as well as Church).
Funny - for all the modern conveniences, we were so much smarter in the old days

Well...it depends on what you consider dumb. I think kids nowadays are lazy, but are smarter when it comes to technology. Kids are starting to learn computers at a younger age and have more access to information. As for back in the day, the kids are smarter when it came to math and literature because they didnt have this technology, just books. I think all kids are dumb, but in general some are smarter than others.

Kids in the old days were alot smarter about life and common sense types of thing. Kids today are smarter about techonology type stuff. So if you take away the technology or even just electricity, the old days kids would run circles around the youth of today.

I think, if you were to do, say, and IQ test kids now days would do better, but that's simply because mankind has gotten better at finding true answers, and finding a way to teach them well.

But I think in the old days, they had more.... what's the word, logic. Back then they didn't have video games, tv, and all that other crap taking over their minds. You get fresh air playing outside, are forsed to read more and other things that are so much better for you!!!

Maybe I sound stupid, but I would have much rather have grown up back in like the 60s then the world I'm growing up in now!

You cannot compare, kids in the older days have discovered almost everything that what kids nowadays are enjoying. So why spend more time in burning a candle and study intensively when there are ready-to-crunch ways.
