Just had a question on an extra credit assignment (one of twenty) and this one has caused a great deal of debate in my household. Any opinions?

Either while operating (if a device of some sort) or 'off' (if a feature of a house, say a pool)

The filament of an incandescent light bulb can get up to 3000 degrees Celsius (5000F). By contrast the surface of the sun is about 6000 degrees Celsius.

The bulb has a vacuum in it so that only a small portion of the heat is conducted to the room.

By contrast the methane or propane flame in your stove or heater is about 2000 degrees Celsius.

I'm gonna refrain from making a "your mom joke." Maybe the hot water heater, or radiator. How about the broiler? Its well over 500 degrees. Maybe some of the electrical wires, I really don't knwo for sure but those would be my guesses.

A spark (or electrical arc) :-) They can be very very very hot, but since they are so small, this corresponds to little energy. (And unless your house is brand new and bult by people who care, you will ahve sparks in at least some of the electrics.

Temperature wise... any fire (pilot light, fireplace)

But hot can also be voltage. (pools run 220)

I think I would rather a quick burn from the fireplace, than a quick zap from the pool electrical system.
