We already know that if you take an atom and blow it up until the nucleus is the size of a basketball that there is vast empty space between the nucleus and the orbiting bands of electrons. So even if the two oppositely charged particles come together you are quite correct to assume that there is still vast space between the two points of contact.

How about this one: An atom has a nucleus with orbiting bands of electrons. Sounds like a galaxy eh? Like a sun and planets? So what if we are living on an electron that's part of an atom of whatever-it-might-be. Woa.... I think I need to refill my bowl!
