Well technically the baby bear is a Cub. or a Bear Cub. True its a finer point of semantics, but I was just checking how seriously you guys read a question and consider your answer -

You could say that is was a Study in Human Nature, that motivated the posting of this question.

Apparently - as of 5:58 pm PDT everyone failed to answer the question, including the librarian and the two high level know-it-all's

Of course the winner will be the one who reads the finer details and gives the actual correct answer. ** obviously after I stated this little added detail - lol .

2 bears, and one cub (since the cub is not a full grown bear yet)

The obvious answer is three. mama, papa, and baby, but if you go further into the story, where did the bears run off to. Why was Goldilocks able to run amuck in the house, Did the bears go visit some family elsewhere?

Once upon a time there were three bears; Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear.
That's all the story has in it, no other bears.

Only two bears, since the baby bear is only a bear cub. There are two adult bears.

According to Jasper Fforde there were four - read his book "The Fourth Bear" which also explains the temperature differential in the three porridge bowls.
