Battery Plus is way cheaper than most places. They usually check alternators for free also and help you install the battery at no cost. Other places charge as much as 40 bucks for checks and installation.

Batteries have lifelines like any part. Swelling in a battery can mean it is going (gone) bad. If it doesn't start or keep a vehicle charged and all other electronics are good, then replace it. Most can be tested- under 70 % capacity is a good time to consider. Longer life batteries are better in the long run since you may give up the car before you throw another out for battery recycling.

I hate to say it but, I wait till it dies. I do most of my own maintenance, but is still wait until the battery dies. Most batteries are generally good for 3 to 5 years. I have purchased batteries everywhere from Battery Warehouse to Walmart, to A local garage. I have never bought a Die-Hard- too expensive, Best battery purchased was an Atlas from a local gas station, don't know how long it lasted, I sold the car and the battery was over 5 yrs old. Most store brand batteries are made by the 4 major battery manufacturers. Any battery made by Exide, Global, East Penn is good. My personal favorite is Interstate but for your Toyota I would go with AC Delco Maintenance - Free, thats what is in my wife's.
I have never purchased a car battery from Batteries Plus, but I have purchased other batts from them and they seem knowledgeable enough.

As a rule, batteries don't fail in miles, but time.
It is probably about due to let you down (although I have seen them last as long as 12 years.
I don't recommend low dollar batteries, because nothing else matters if you really NEED the car, and it won't crank.
Almost all quality batteries will do you well.
If you travel much I would recommend something that has an easily fulfilled nation-wide warranty.
Interstate
NAPA
Delco
You want something that, if you have the paperwork (receipt) you can depend on timely replacement without hassles anywhere you are likely to drive.
