It could be stolen, though plagirism is a much more rare occurance than most realize. More importantly, however, posting something here where anyone can see it counts as having your first print rights taken, which can be a problem if you're seeking publication for something.

If you want feedback, find a critiquing group--your first print rights remain intact so long as you have control over who sees your work.

Your poem is automatically copyright protected as soon as you write it, so technically you don't have to "do" anything to copyright it. However, if you want extra assurance, send a copy of the poem to yourself through *registered* mail (this is important because the date is then officially recorded). Don't open it, and keep it in the event that you have a copyright dispute with someone. Alternatively, you can officially copyright work--I'm not sure how it works for poetry, but novels can be done for about $40 USD.

Also, DO NOT enter any poetry.com contests. It's a well-known poetry contest scam, and you have to pay for publication.

As to publishing-buy The Poets Market which lists many journals, magazines, publishers and their requirements. As to copyright-once a poem. story etc. is written and published, it is yours and is copyrighted. Sure, if you publish a book ,you apply for a copyright and ISBN # but, once anything you write is in a "fixed" form-that is written for someone else to read, it is yours and is copyrighted. At least, that is my understanding. By the way-"publish" in this context would even apply to the poems you post here. Be sure you have a copy of your work, though.

There are contests that will publish almost any poem in their collections because they want you to buy their poetry anthology. Unfortunately, there isn't much market for a single poem, or an entire book really.

Try magazines first. Writer's Digest has a book called Poetry Market, you could probably check it out at the library.

Google it and I think you will find contests and other suggestions.

here's what you do...write the poem and mail it to yourself. Never open it...If it is stolen and used, you have proof that you wrote it because the postage mark is dated. It's almost like getting it copyrighted. and yes, it could be stolen if you put it anywhere where the public can view. Hell, I might even steal it;.

Go to the library and look up publishers who deal in poetry. If your poem is worthy, they will publish it and also copyright it for you. Ergo! Problem solved.

yes people could decide to plagiarize it!

submit it to poetry site www.poetry.com under your name.
then visit several poetry forums and submit yours too.

that way if someone else steals it, we'll know it's already on the net!

and before you post it here, you can state alongside your poem the places which you already posted it.

if you want to publish it, you should look for suitable writers or people who compile poetry books. i know poetry.com has offered me to get my poem published in a volume.

you could get selected too :)
