In reality, they messed up America. They led youths to the free love saga that still is causing problems for millions of the females and their adult children who don't know their fathers

I don't think the beatles are or were so important to our nation/world. I do beleive they were and still are memorable. The reasons for being so memorable are the same reasons people gave for importance i.e., know one had heard of anything quite like them before, they arrived at a time when freedom of speech was more a movement than a topic. Timing, if they were to come on the scene today or in the early 2oth century as a new sound I don't beleive they would of had the impact they did.

The Beatles introduced more than a different type of music to America, but a Style.
We had Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis.....all that hip movement, and it couldn't be seen on T.V.
They were just as amazed by us as we were with them....and over the years, their music from those still alive and gone, stay with us.
All you need is Love....Hey Jude......Remember when Paul was suppose to be dead......Helter Skelter The White Album......and now Paul, SIR Paul is still thriving.
John Lennon, a big influence in the Arts....and probably Watching The Wheel Go Round.....wherever he may be, stepped down to his Beautiful Boy(s).
George Harrison, great attribute to The Traveling Wilbury's,
and Ringo (Richard Starkey) Starr is like an Energizer Bunny.
I gotta stop...I just Love The Beatles!

I think the Beatles just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The 60s were a time of upheaval, questioning and self-discovery - The Beatles were part of that prophetic youthful rebellion - somewhere between Bob Dylan and the Doors and Rolling Stones. They were troubadours and poets - the court jesters who could stand before the king (or king-like figures) and challenge the status-quo. The symbolized and spoke for that generation in a way no one else could.

The band?
They weren't. It wouldn't have mattered if it was the Beatles or the Monkees. The increased disposable income and newfound advertising power of market science of the '50's would have destroyed our parents' minds with or without the Beatles.

Beatles style changed music, fashion, etc. at a rapid pace. If they didnt exist someone else might have done it, but the point is they did and did it to an extreme.

I don't know if they were "important", per se, but they definately had an impact on our culture that transcended pop music. They helped usher in changes in music, society, political involvement, etc through their music, and the changes in their music and personally from Sgt. Pepper forward.
