Don't tell me to shop somewhere else for my big shops.
I want to be the FASTEST packer in the store, with no more lines backing up behind me.

Clarification: I did not mean...."WHILE I am annoying people at WINCO." I meant "BECAUSE I am annoying people at Winco." Also to one respondent: Couldn't get a job at Winco. They've seen me pack.

Here in Spain with 1 cashier & 12 people in line, (some stores don't even have bags except for sale for 5cents) Just throw the stuff back into the cart, throw in enough bags & wheel everything out of the way and then take your time and do it right (away from the impatient crowd).
We have a fairly large 4 wheel shopping cart which only holds half of a store carts worth of groceries. They don't have paper bags and I have to wet my fingers 3 times to get the plastic bags open. Talk about slow! A full shopping cart or more gets wheeled out to the trunk of the car and everything dumped in there. We have to put a $1 coin in to unlock the cart to begin with and you have to take the cart back to where you park all the other carts and plug in the chain to get your coin back.

Hope this helps you to get out of the way fast.

Are you the shopper or the checkout cashier? As a shopper:
Place the largest, sturdiest & heaviest items to the cashier 1st, followed by the medium & bulky items second, & the fragile & smallest items last.
As a checkout cashier: start packin as described above.
I always use cloth bags with handles while shopping so that I know I'm not buying more than I can carry! Sometime I have two bags but only when I have extra money/shopping to do!
I'd point out that being the fastest packer will come with experience, planning, practice & effort. But speed shopping is something that might be reserved for game shows. As I'm spending MY money in a store where I must WAIT in line for a cashier & OTHER customers, there is no shame in taking my sweet time & let THEM wait!

Don't ya love WinCo? Much less $$$ than anywhere else around, and the best selection!

I keep my groceries seperated in the cart as I shop -- produce in this corner, frozen foods in that corner, non-food items in the fold-out kiddie seat thingie, canned foods in the front of the cart. That way when I get to the checkout I can unload the cart quickly and in the same order I want to bag the groceries.

Now if they'd just get done with the freakin road construction getting to the store!

Use the plastic bags first, its amazing how strong they are, I always get the cashier with a worried look because my bags are so full. Just grab the hard, unbreakable stuff first anything in box or bag, and start throwing it in, seperate the fragil soft stuff, eggs, stuff like that and put these in seperate bags, use as many bags as you want, just to do it quick, and have your shopping cart right there so you can just toss the stuff in. Put toilet paper and bulky items underneth your cart. Practice at home if you have to. But you know what I do, I either go way early morning or late night, but i am only filling 4-6 bags at a time.

Start by the way you place items on the belt before they are rang up.
Put all your frozen together, cold together, cans, boxes etc...
That makes it easier all the way around. Then as the items are rang you don't have to look for the proper items to fill each bag, you just place exactly what is in front of you into a bag, and go on to the next one.
Its great when you get home too. You can put all of your groceries away alot faster because you have them all in one spot as you need them. One bag goes to the freezer, on the the pantry, etc..

First you grab a huge garbage bag nad put it at the end of the belt on the grocery line. As the groceries come down the belt place your fore arm flat on the belt behind a massive pile of groceries and quickly sweep the pile of groceries into the trash bag. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

Being the best,or in your case the fastest, will take some time. First practice on packing your groceries carefully. Little by little start going a little faster each time you come to the store.

I worked in a grocery store for 4 years when I was in high school. It depends on how the customer unloads their cart and also you need to have 3 bags ready. One for cans, one for toiletries, and one for soft items. Forget putting gallon jugs in bags unless customer requests it. That will speed it up considerallbly also set aside breads and chips till last same with fresh vegatables and eggs.

You should place similar items together. All fruits and veggies together, all bread and light items together, all frozen together...etc. Try to pack as it comes to you. Make more light bags if things are coming in small groups. Just say sorry for taking to long if you take forever.

Lots and lots of bags. Not too many heavy things in one bag. When you put your things on the belt, keep like things together (cans with cans, ramen noodles together). Then don't stress. Just throw it all in the bags.
