A Knock sensor does exactly what is says It senses engine Knocks from piston Slap to spark Knock, in some instances A knock sensor has even picked up the thump of a sound system.
what it does is tell the ECM to change the timing to eliminate the knock and will continue to tell the ecm to change the timing until it no longer senses the knock.

Basically it adjusts the timing of spark delivery to prevent preignition. Usually a MIL (Check engine light) will appear if the sensor is bad. Engine knock and run on can also indicate a problem.

It senses the clatter of pre-ignition .
When the sensor is "tripped", the ECM retards the timing slightly.
When the clatter clears, the ECM starts adding back the timing.

A bad knock sensor MAY put your car in "limp mode" depending on the year make and model. Symptoms of "limp mode" will vary by year make and model as well.
If your car is in limp mode you will have a CEL, and you will probably be able to tell.

well how do you react if your doorbell is rung ???
lol
no it just kicks a check engine light, it doesnt affect the runability except change the timing a little because it thinks its spark knock
