The first Reich (empire) was considered to be the Holy Roman Empire, lasting from medieval times to the Napoleonic Wars. The second was the united German Empire that lasted from 1871 to 1918, when Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated.

The first was the Roman empire. The second was under the unification of the German Empire in the mid 1800's.

According to Wikipedia during the 1800's the German name was
Deutsches Reich, which was used until the 1940's. In English it was called the 2nd Reich to connect it to the first Reich of the Roman Empire. Hitler used a bird symbol (I am not sure which bird maybe a hawk) which was used in Roman times. It was to connect Nazi Germany with Germany's past for propaganda.

Reich is the German rule for empire. The first Reich was under Charlemagne (around 800 AD), the second Reich was under Otto Von Bismark (1800s) and Hitler wanted to start the 3rd Reich

"Reich" simply means "realm". The two first reichs were the Holy Roman Empire (not the real ancient Roman Empire, but a German conederation of states during the Middle Ages) and Bismar¨ks second state (reich) in the 1870s.

Semi mad has it right on. Hitler an his Ministers were obsessed with the Roman Empire. I live in Germany for Ten years, I got to see a lot of Reich History while there. Hitler was trying to revert the German to their own Elder Nordic gods and blend them with that of the Roman World to create a new religion. Hitler as well as most of his Ministers believed they were the one to revive the glory of the Roman Empire, that they were directly connected to it, even though Historically it was the Germanic tribes that eventually destroyed Rome. A lot of Irony in the European theater of WW II.

According to a fascinating tome called The Hitler Fact Book by Thomas Fuchs, "the first Reich was the Holy Roman Empire of the Middle Ages; the second, the one established by Bismarck and ended by Germany's defeat in 1918." The term was a favorite of Hitler's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. Hitler himself wasn't that crazy about it, Fuchs notes; he outlawed the term at the beginning of World War II and referred to his realm merely as the Reich.

It was some cracked idea he had about the history of Germany, and it's right to rise again and dominate the world.
