Typically, a BA degree in general is a "lower" degree, because it isn't as in dept as a BS degree. This is not to say BA's are easier, they're not as in depth into Math as a BS--but they are more broad in courses. BA's usually require courses taken outside of your main concentration, usually courses that are liberal arts in nature. Also, you'll probably have to take a foreign language and have a minor. A BS degree would be much more in depth into Math classes, and you would only have to take the core requirements in the liberal arts classes, but you'll be taking more difficult math classes.
Edit:
Also, usually a BS degree requires a "more difficult" science course. For example, instead of taking regular Physics, you'd have to take Calculus Physics. Check your course catalog for your University.

Most schools only offer one or the other. There are s few that offer both. For example, at the University of Minnesota, you can get a BS in Math through their Institute of Technology or a BA through their College of Liberal Arts. The main differences between the degrees involve the non-Math classes that are taken. Those in IT are reuired to take mor science classes than those in CLA.
For someone only interested in Mathematics, there wouldn't be a whole lot of difference.
With a BS, you get to wear a hood at graduation that has gold trim. With a BA, it is a boring white.

A BA in math is usually what you get if you want to go into teaching.
A BS is more science related, more physics etc

BA (Bachelor of Arts) Degree requires a foreign language be taken by the graduate.
BS (Bachelor of Science) does not.
Both requite the same mathmatic courses. The depth of study in mathmatics is not a factor.
