Because they rely on a CGI rather than plot, suspense and direction.
Star Wars was made great by a "special effects" team driving by a model set throwing firecrackers from a pick-up truck. Now, really, was Sith all that?
The Texas Chainsaw Massecre was amazing, but the remake was nowhere near as disturbing.....but the guts and gore were abound.
And the abundance of sequels and remakes really have hacked up the genre, ironically enough.

Movie makers today just don't have the same creativity as did movie makers in the past. Creativity has been replaced by the convenience of special effects.
Also in an age of the internet streaming and of DVDs, movies just don't have the same impact as they once did. We live in the age of Been-There-Done-That when it comes to movie scares and thrills.

I wish I knew. But its true, they do suck. Ron Howard should do a scary film. I bet he could do a good one.

have you ever noticed in the older horror flicks its more life like and realistic? ive wondered this before too, and i thnk it is because now a days, we have so much technology, that they use all of it in one movie, making things look NOT so realistic...to the point where you know it has to be fake...?

I guess most ideas have been used up and the "moviemakers" can't think of anymore "scary" themes.

because they're not realistic. too many special affects take all the remakes. the originals are much scarier cause they seem like they could happen more.
