it's a luv song he wrote for his first wife at the time'1956', Vivian Dorraine Liberto Cash Distin , not June Carter ...and he is saying that even though he could/can easily sway from her luv...he walks the line because he is truely inluv with her and well be faithfull...

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

To me it means that he will do what's right so she will love him in return...

Here is the Lyrics...
I Walk The Line by Johnny Cash
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

Well, when you are drunk and you get pulled over the cops make you walk a straight line. Johnny is saying in his song "because you're mine I'll walk the line." He would give up drinking if that is what it takes to win the woman he loves.

That was Johnny's way of expressing to what lengths he would go for his beloved June. "Walking the Line" or "Towing the line" refers to anything from making the money, carrying the burdens, doing the things that need to be done that no one else wants to. An immature man thinks only of himself but a mature man in love will walk the line for his beloved.

Johnny was talking about being faithful to his wife while he is out on the road.

"I find it very, very easy to be true/I find myself alone when each day is through/Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you/Because you're mine/I walk the line"

It's pretty clear cut I think.

When he met June Carter he was one good drug addict. For her he walked the line meaning the straight and narrow for her. He didn't exactly go straight but they did stay married for quite a few years.
