Is this similar shopping to other asian tourist spots, ie. fake branded merchandise??

fake or authentic all depend on your choice, preference, budget, taste etc, it would be better for you to look for something that you can't find back home where only KK/KL can offer, memorable n long lasting for your trip there, good value should only be from your personal point of view !

KK has lots of decent shops. particularly in the Wisma Merdeka.
There are souvenir shops but take care buying from street pedlars.
Prices are cheap compared to western prices.
