My Father-in-law's Uncle recently passed away. He had one Daughter who claims the will could not be found. She's had a previous drug problem. My Father-in-law "Bob", knows that there was indeed a will and that he is in it. There aren't any other relatives and we are in another state, what can he do, besides (or before) getting a laywer, to find out ?

If it truly was a "living will" (an advance care directive) it is irrelevant anyway. A living will is about what life-saving or life-prolonging measures should or should not be used, and other end-of-life issues.

Get in touch with the deceased's lawyer. He would have kept copies of any wills. In the meantime, register a protest in the jurisdiction the deceased lived in, about how the estate may be in the process of being illegally distributed.

Your father-in-law's Uncle should have been more careful, since HE knew his daughter's problem!
