Try fingernail polish remover or isopropyll alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in light amounts, gently rubbing surface.

Quickly pat the residue with the removed sticker itself... sticky side down.
It'll pull the remaining glue off pronto.

Use a dryer heat and slightly peel up the over do residue or take a waxing cloth and press it against the sticker area after using the hairdryer

Ah, I see you're talking about books so my answer won't be as good. But to remove the sticky residue from glass or plastic vegetable oil works really well.

There is something you can BUY that does this...and the bottle has a stiff plastic scraper on it to work the gummy stuff off after you squeeze on the substance in the bottle.
I wish I knew the name of it...I haven't bot it...but my sister has.

try rubbing with peanut butter or using a product called Goo Gone. They will not damage your books unless they are a matte finish,then they might leave an oily stain.

acetone is very good to use and does a great job also nail polish remover. use both of these products with care and keep away from eyes
