Right now Amtrak is your best bet. The price is reasonable, but it takes quite awhile to cross the state because it stops in every small city along the way.

What we need is an express line from KC to Columbia to St. Louis that will take you less time than it takes to drive. Its possible, but lawmakers lack the political will to make it happen.

Amtrak train. It takes longer than driving, but it's fairly cheap (especially considering the price of gas these days) and the trains are usually, in my experience, fairly close to schedule.
