Just about any of the name brand laptops will serve you well. But you're going to have to do some comparison shopping to get the best deal. You need to compare 3 things:

1. RAM (memory)
2. Hard drive (storage)
3. CPU (speed)

You want to get the most in each category. In my opinion RAM is the most important, followed by hard drive, and finally CPU. Here's why. Most people will never be able to tell the difference between a 1.8GHz and 2.3Ghz CPU. Most people WILL be able to tell the difference between 256MB and 512MB RAM. And as long as the basic computer has at least a 40GB hard drive to begin with, you can always get an external hard drive later on if you absolutely need more storage space. Chances are your hard drive will probably be in the 60 - 80GB range to begin with.

One other thing to consider is the built in burner. Most laptops have a combination CD-RW / DVD-ROM so you can burn your music to CDs and watch DVDs. The more expensive units will let you burn CDs and DVDs.

Finally, if you are still within your budget, I would absolutely recommend maxing out your computer's RAM. Just about everything you do needs RAM and the more you have, the better the computer will operate.

Hope this helps a bit.

Best Buy has some AWEsome laptop within your range. Stop at a local store and check things out. I would stick with Toshiba, HP, Fujitsu, or Sony as far as brands are concerned.
