Cheaper is self...you can go to any music store and find beginner's books with instructions on how to play chords and read sheet music. It would probably be easiest to have someone help you, but going to a teacher could be expensive. If you know anyone who already plays guitar, see if they wouldn't mind giving you cheap/free lessons. I did that when one of my friends needed a bass player for his band, and I've now been playing bass for 5 years. Teaching yourself can be very frustrating and it's easier to give up when you're teaching yourself, but if you stick with it, it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Self is Definately cheaper, but not always the easiest either. I would try and find some buddies to jam with or check out some web sites. I like www.wholenote.com. Buy some teaching aids like books or videos. Learn how to read music and Tabulature. Both will come in handy in learning. But my 1st bit of advice is DON'T GIVE UP. It will be hard and you will reach spots where it seems like you can't get better, but just keep practicing. 2nd be realistic and practice AT LEAST a 1/.2 hour to an hour a day. 3rd have fun with it and learn songs you like. Hope all goes well. If you need some help drop me an email @ ramsey01@cros.net or guitarzan30@yahoo.com. I'll try my best to give advice or help when needed.

I use to go to the music stores and look at guitars and watch other players play and then go home and try what they were doing!! I was mostly self taught. Went to Walmart and got a poster of all the guitar chords and praticed and watched other players. Best way I think without spending money on a teacher.

The BEST way to learn is to spend time - A LOT OF TIME - practicing what you already know, learning more (which goes on forever), and spending time w/buddies showing them something new you just learned recently and having them show you what they've just learned recently... Also, try playing the same thing with different fingers... It'll help to get your fingers strong and limber... DEFINITELY get an inexpensive electric (easier on fingers) and small amp with some effects already built into it... That'll save on buying those pedals... ABOVE ALL: Have FUN! That's what it's all about...! The groupies come later...! LOL

cheaper but harder to learn by self, teacher will make it easier but more expensive, guitar for dummies learn chords and to read tab but you'll still need a teacher of some sort to do all the changeovers and to teach you the most economical way to use your fingers on the fret board

You know the joke?
A man is walking down the street in New York, looking for his destination, and he stops a guy and asks him, "Excuse me, sir, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?" The guy says, "Practice, practice, practice."
