More specific? Ok, very very simple, the players are inside the airplane and the airplane crashes killing everybody. What the league would do about it?

Thanks "hammerhead" heres the copy/paste from Wikipedia: In 1970, an airplane crash claimed the lives of 75 people (including the entire coaching staff and 37 members of the Marshall football team). They were returning, on November 14, after playing East Carolina University. In 1972, the university built and named a new student union, the Memorial Student Center, in honor of the team.

There is no way they would cancel the season. 911 was incapable of stopping pro sports, so a plane crash would not, either.
I imagine the league would stop play for a time (like a week or maybe two weeks), but then they would determine a plan B as far as scheduling is concerned, and carry on.
By the way, the odds of dying in a plane crash are estimated at 1 in 310,000 (when flying in the USA, Canada, or similar). Especially given the money pro sports teams spend on travel because of the value of their players - they have nice new planes, the best pilots - better than Marshall had back in the 70s - we're talking about an extremely extremely unlikely event.

It's a gruesome thought, but I've thought about it myself....
I din't know it happened in college before, so forfeiting the season would make sense.
If it happened in professional sports....I don't know. Would MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA all cancel their seasons? I'm sure they will all cancel a bunch of games, but if an entire team was lost they would eventually promote players from their minor-league affiliates or even have a special draft where the other teams would have to give up a player or two...
Hope it never happens. Well... maybe to the Yankees...

That happened to West Virginia's Marshall's Thundering Herd Football Team in 1970.
Look it up on the net and read what happened durring the first game of the following season ... spirits might really exist. Seriously. There is a documentary about that game and to give you a hint, the opposing team was getting tackled by players that wern't there,

i would think they'd cancel the season. it would not be right to carry on a season if that happened. there would be a time for the nhl to grieve over the loss. i know the nhl and nhl fans would be devastated if that actually happened. as soon as the grieving period was over, they would probably have to promote minor leaugers and get other players from a the other teams in a draft. i think i read somewhere that there have been a few times where teams have had to make emergency landings so they could prevent this type of tragedy from happening. i hope nothing happens like this but in life we have no way of knowing how long we'll live.

Back in the 70's, Marshall University's football team was killed in a plane crash. I really don't know what happened, or if the school forfeited the season or not. I just remember hearing my father talk about the plane crash while he was working in Huntington, WV (where Marshall U. is located)at the time.

They would likely have the minor league players brought up, or the Club would agree to forfeit the games. I mean other then the Penguins, when Mario was playing, how many teams had the owner flying with the team. Most owners, by my guess, would have their own plane IF they travel to the games. You know just in case.

Actually there is a contingency plan if something were to occur in US/Canada professional sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL). There would be something similar to a draft where the team that had the disaster would be allowed to take players from other teams to keep the franchise in tact.
I would compare it to the expansion draft when a new team enters the league.

Hammerhead Jd is right and they are making a movie about the Marshall tragedy. It's called "We are Marshall."
It's starring: Matthew McConaughey as Coach Jack Lengyel
Matthew Fox as Red Dawson

Honestly, they would have to have a sort of draft of players from other teams like an expansion draft and would use players from their farm teams. That is the reason to have farm teams - so that you have other players in reserve if something happens to your NHL team.
If it was a sport without a farm (like the NFL or NBA) then I don't know.

That depends...is the team on the plane at the time? You should be more specific. If we assume the team is lost, then the season would be over by forfeit, and the next season may be canceled for grieving purposes, but the team would be rebuilt in the end.
