We have two stray dogs that follwed my husband home from work. They have no tags or collars. They are obviously well cared for. Is there a method of detecting weather or not they have a microchip implant? We heard a rumor that you can use some common house- hold device to get a signal if the frequency matches the microchip. ???

We have two STRAY DOGS that follwed my husband home from work. They have no tags or collars. They are obviously well cared for. The pound is closed and before we call them in the morning we wanted to know Is there a method of detecting whether or not they have a microchip implant? We heard a rumor that you can use some common house- hold device to get a signal if the frequency matches the microchip. ??? The Animal Control will scan them but then they take them. Usually if the owner doesn't claim them in 3 days and they can't get adopted out they are put down. Hence our concern. We want to find the owners! We want to just detect if there is a chip to determine if going to animal control is the best step to take next.

the rumour you heard was false and different microchips operate on different frequencies...
the microchip is small you couldnt feel it however there are things you can look for
tattoos in ear or tummy (if friendly enough)
call your local SPCA, or pound to check if anyone has reported loosing the dogs.. that is always more effective than taking the dog to the shelter and having it admitted etc... if somebody has reported it lost you can call them directly
good luck
make sure you report finding the dogs.. because if you dont you could be charged with theft

It depends on what microchip you have, but I know the avid company sells the avid microchip scanner to read the chip. I believe some Animal Control Agencies might have them too, but not sure. Check out the brand of Microchips website to see if you can get them. Plus I think Avid makes a universal scanner, where it will read, ISO chips, and HomeAgain Chips as well.
Your best bet is to take them to the pound or vet clinic and explain to them, I sure they will help you out.

Call a local vet to see if they will scan the dogs at no charge. Usually they will. If there is no microchip, you will also want to report the ffound dogs to the Humane Society with a description and your phone number. Typically, they will allow you to keep the dogs in your custody and put someone in touch with you if it seems that your description matches their lost dog description. You may also want to post fliers in the area where they first began following your husband.

Your vet shouldn't charge you to scan 2 found
dogs. The Humane Society would also have scanners. So would Animal Control.
I don't know of any common household appliances that would scan a microchip.

Just take them to the vet to get it checked out. If you can't afford to, you shouldn't own any pets in the first place. If u take them and they don't have an RFID chip, just get them a routine checkup and shots and either keep 'em yourself or find a loving home for them.

You can feel them under the skin (usually between the shoulder blades) if there is one. Also check inside the ear for a tattoo, although I don't know if that's common practice or not.

I have never heard of this. I could feel the one in the dog I found but it was a small dog and it was like a large grain of rice between the dog's shoulder blades.

Not household - but look up AVID microchip for information.
