The mean is to represent an entire data set. Mean is just one of the ways which can represent a bunch of numbers. Basically, a mean can tell us a lot about a set but obviously not everything.
Because, 4 and 6 have a mean of 5.
-10, 0, and 20 also have a mean of 5.
1345, -900, 14/3, and -429 2/3 also have a mean of 5.
So as you can see they all have a mean of 5 but the data sets can be VERY different.
Another thing, there are different kinds of mean too. This mean and the other ones up above are all talking about the arithmetic mean which is also called the average. There is a geometric mean as well.

The mean is the average. For example, the mean of 3, 4, 5, and 6 is 4.5.

In statistics, mean has two related meanings:
the average in ordinary English, which is also called the arithmetic mean (and is distinguished from the geometric mean or harmonic mean). The average is also called sample mean.
the expected value of a random variable, which is also called the population mean.
As well as statistics, means are often used in geometry and analysis; a wide range of means have been developed for these purposes, which are not much used in statistics. See the Other means section below for a list of means.
Sample mean is often used as an estimator of the central tendency such as the population mean. However, other estimators are also used.
there are no. of definition regarding mean. for more pl. visit:

It is the average value of some quantity.
For example, if you had 3 people.
Person 1 weighs 100lbs
Person 2 weighs 200lbs
Person 3 weighs 152lbs
Than the mean of their weight is (100+200+152)/3

Since you are asking this question in the mathematics section I assume you are talking about mathematics. In that case you would technicaly call the mean the "arithmetic mean". The arithmetic mean is the average of a group of numbers.

The arithmetic "mean", also called the average, of a series of quantities is obtained by finding the sum of the quantities and dividing it by the number of quantities. In the series 1,3,5,18,19,20,25, the mean or average is 13-in other words, 91 divided by 7.

the mean is the average of all values... to calculate the mean, you add up all of the values, and divide by the number of values that you have. for example, the mean of 5,6 and 7 is
18/3, so it's 6.

the mean is the average of a set (group) of numbers. WHat this means is, to find the mean you add up all the numbers that you have in the set (group). Then, you divide this sum by the number of numbers you have.
it's like this:
{x, y, z}
x+y+z
--------- <-- divided by
3 (since you have three values that contribute to the sum)

it means "average"
so basically you add up the numbers and divide by the number of numbers there are
unless its a geometrical mean
then you have to multiply and find the square root
hope this helped
