Keeping old friends and making new friends are both good. One is not better than the other. You have to keep enlarging your circle of friends to make yourself and your life interesting and meaningful.

Having your dear friends is all ways a
great benefit and having new friends
is like a bonus to your growth.
I'd keep a balance of both. Aren't
friends like your family that you'd
never want to do without.

Find new friends, but keep the old, for the first is silver, but the other is gold. Old friends are good, because they know you for who you are, and you don't need to keep pretenses with them - they've seen you in your worst and best days, and are still there for you.

divide your attention as:
1-80% for old friends: because they are the ones who knew you since you were kids and you have history.
2-20% to have new friends: because you must go on in life and increase the number of people who loves you and care about you
