A completely torn rotator cuff is characterized by inability to elevate the upper extremity past the shoulder (present in 90% of patients with this problem). Other symptoms include inability to raise the hand off the small of the back when placed there passively. There actually may be relatively little pain at this point.

A partial tear may cause pain when bringing the arm out to the side and elevating past the level of the shoulder, pain with turning motions of the shoulder, pain when attempting to lay on the affected side or laying on the back.

Some partial tears do well with conservative management, complete tears are an indication for surgery if the patient is healthy enough for surgery.

Realistically though, you need to see a doctor. Realize that if you have torn your rotator cuff it will not heal without surgery. Do NOT ignore this please.

Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Tremendous shoulder pain would be a BIG clue. See your Orthopedist to be sure.
