YES YES YES!!
Jeter, unlike David Ortiz, can contribute in other ways besides hitting. Yes, Ortiz is an amazing clutch HITTER, but if he goes 0 for 4, then what else can he do on the field to help his team? He can't make a great play in the field, Jeter can. It seems like the MVP is always a slugger, but they wouldn't have their stats without guys getting on base ahead of them.
Jeter has been hitting around .340 all year, has close to 30 steals, plays a PREMIUM position ON the field, and has been consistent all year long. He also has won Gold Gloves each of the last two seasons, and if I'm not mistaken, Ortiz has won ZERO, as the only glove he wears is a batting glove. Also, it's clear that Varitek is more important to the Red Sox than Ortiz is, just look how the team is falling apart without him. As for Ortiz's late-inning heroics, he should thank Manny for hitting behind him, and for getting those nice, fat pitches to hit.
Jeter is a career .315 hitter, is already close to 2100 hits at age 32, and will go WAY over 3000. He could hit 30 homers if he wanted but he is the ultimate team player and sets the table for the guys behind him. Anyone who says Jeter is "overrated" doesn't know what the hell they are talking about. Hey, Ortiz, put on a glove for 150 games or so, then maybe the sportswriters and fans will consider you an MVP, not an MVDH!! Real players do it both ways!

The answer is no he doesnt deserve mvp im sry he just doesnt(I know i lost ur vote 4 best answer right there but atleast hear me out). Listen I respect Jeter a lot and is one of the best ball players on the yankees but wen ur not even ur teams mvp how can u be the leagues mvp. Mariano rivera has been and still is the most valuable player for that team w/o him they loose ten more games a year atleast best closer ever by far. However mo will never get mvp so the next choice is obviously ortiz and yes ortiz shuld get it. And i will explain y in a second but let me point out to previous answers that astonished me.
First bamalik43 pujols is in the nl they get there own mvp idiot so how bout u go watch some other sport b/c u obviously know nothing bout baseball. Second carlosherrera4 u might be the biggest idiot ever jeter did not carry the team threw the injuries george stienbreners wallet did all they did is went out and bought replacements aka abreu and wilson. And second how culd u say that the sox wuld be the same w/o ortiz he puts up twice as many hr and rbi's as nixon or pena so how culd either of them replace them w/o papi the sox wuld not even have a winning record this year. Yankee fans can be so ignorant some times i hate it u all think ur better than the red sox fans no wonder everyone out hear on the west coast roots for the sox against u guyz cuz ur all stuck up snobs who think ur better than everyone else.
ORTIZ deserves mvp and manny shuld be second because w/o manny's protection ortiz wuld get walked every time in the clutch jeter shuldnt even be top 5 let alone number one he is a good player but no one on the yankees shuld ever win mvp b/c if one player goes down georgie will just buy a replacement so none of them are that valuable. Vlad will finish third mauer 4th and pudge 5th

OK, just to let you know, I am a Red Sox fan. Over years, Jeter has proven himself to be the guy in the Yankee lineup who is toughest to get out in a clutch situation. Last year in the fifth game of the ALDS in the ninth inning with the Yankees trailing by two runs, Jeter singled to lead off the ninth. Then last year's MVP, what a travesty, grounded into a double play. I, along with several other Red Sox fans disguised in Angels gear, yelled myself hoarse at that development. The point is that MVP is driven by numbers. Jeter can get a key single to stage a comeback against the Red Sox last weekend, but it shows up as a single. A-Rod can hit a bunch of meaningless home runs in non-clutch situations, but the baseball writers from around the country are going to vote for him and not Jeter who is unfortunately clutch, or for Big Papi, who deserves it, because Jeter does not have the slugging and Big Papi is primarily a DH. A-Rod won the MVP while at Texas several years ago in a year that the Rangers finished in last. Wow, they really benfitted by having him.

I am a Yankees fan too, and I Derek Jeter definitely deserves it. Yes, David Ortiz has 4 times the amount of homers and will end up with like double the amount of RBIs, but when you add it all up, the fact that the Red Sox won't make the playoffs wipes out all of his numbers and throws them down the toilet. Jeter carried his team through the injuries to Cano, Matsui, and Sheffield. Plus, think about this: You can't replace Jeter. You can't put Nick Green or someone else in the SS position and expect them to do the same as him. You can easily replace David Ortiz. Put manny at DH, when Trot Nixon gets back, put him at RF, and then put Wily Mo Pena at LF. The stats will still be the same, except for walk-offs.
MVP stands for Most Valuable Player. How valuable are you really when your team is not going to make the playoffs???

Yes he does considering he has been the only constant inthe Yankees line up. Everyone on the team has struggled a little bit at some time and jeter has already reached his average rbi per season. his power is down a little bit do to some nagging injuries but he drives in runs, produces runs by stealing bases, and plays a very high caliber defense at the most demanding position. To the guy who said pujols, theres and american league mvp and a national league mvp. Ortiz shouldnt get it because as of now his team isnt in the playoffs and pretty much turns his hits worthless, and he doesnt play defense. Also, did you see that series? Ortiz hit one good home run the other was worthless, and jeter got the game tying rbi off of papelbon

whoever that girl is that says Jeter has no heart is crazy..I am a Met fan, and Jeter has more heart than any player, he puts it all on the field every day...Ortiz is a great hitter but how can someone who doesnt play the field deserve the MVP, he is a clutch hitter and has 40 more RBIs than Jeter but Jeter has made many big plays in the field probably saving 20 runs throughout the year. but I think it is Guerrero with the Angels that is the MVP..he has to carry the team..or even Pudge with teh Tigers, b/c youhave to add the way he has helped the pitching staff.

He definately deserves it he has carried his team through all the injuries they have had. He is a hustle player and plays because he love the game not for the money (which he gets a large amount of). His leading competitor is that fatman david ortiz who gets a day off when he plays. Ortiz's praised strenth is hitting but is only batting .285 while Jeter is batting .334. Jeter has more skills than hitting and plays one of the most important and difficult positions in the game.

Historically making the playoffs is not criteria for winning the MVP. Just look aarod in 2003. Last place in the AL West and he still won AL MVP. Do you know what ticks me off about yankees fans? They honestly don't know how good their team is. When one of their players goes down, they freak, like it's the end of the world. They are only good again when they go out and get someone in the trading deadline. They say that joe torre should get manager of the year because the yankess hung in it when matsui and sheffield went down. Oh yeah, what a hard time it must be winning games with only jason giambi, alex rodriguez, jorge posada, johnny damon, mike mussina, randy johnson, mariano rivera, cc wang, and oh yeah, now bobby abreu. Tell me how valuble can one guy to a team when gary sheffield will bat 9th and DH for them because there in no room in the field and bernie williams won't even play at all. The yankees, even without sheffield and matsui, up and down are better than the red sox talent wise. Seriously who would the yankees want from the red sox besdies manny and papi. Giambi is better than Youkilus, Cano is better than Loretta, Jeter is better than Gonzalez or Cora, Rodriguez is better than Lowell, Damon is better than Crisp , Abreu >is better than Nixon. Posada and Varitek proably come up about even. We win Manny over Matsui. Ortiz is better Sheffield (presumed DH when everyone comes back). Mussina, Johnson, Wang, Lidle, Rivera is better than Schilling, Beckett, Lester, Wells, Papelbon. Ok you didn't have sheffield and matsui. The Red Sox didn't have Varitek, Nixon, and Crisp. The yankees entire lineup is future hall of famers. Ortiz, Manny, Varitek, maybe Schilling, and hopefully Papelbon (knock on wood) are. Yet for the first four months of the season the red sox were the better team. On paper, this team looks horrible, but somehow it did it. How did it do it? Ortiz. Ortiz. Ortiz. At the beginning of the season, the yankees looked like they should have won 150 games. It looked like it would be a miracle if the red sox were even in contention for the wild card by august. But they are, because of Big Papi.
Note: I will say this for jeter, I don't know why he hasn't won it before, he shouldn't have won it this year. But back in the day (like 5-6 years ago), before he started selling cologne and before the yankees were more loaded than a first place fantasy team, jeter was the yankees, and the yankees won the world series and he should have won the MVP at least once.

Yes, Jeter deserves the MVP!
Look at his numbers! He's having one of the best seasons of his career!
Another player that deserves consideration for MVP is Jorge Posada. Yet, another player having his best season ever. Who says one doesn't get better with age? :)
GO YANKEES!
