OK - this IS NOT in your head. If X rays have not shown any bone damage or evidence of arthritis your problem may be in the ligament or muscle or even radiating from your back. First of all, see another doctor....no one should be in pain for this length of time. A few things you can do until then. Check in the mirror. Is one hip higher than the other? When you walk is your gait the same with both feet? When does the hip hurt the most and where? These are things you need to be able to tell the other doctor. If you have access to a pool - especially a warm water one, get into the water and do gentle walking to strengthen the hip and ease the pressure. Hip pain can be caused by so many different things.
If your doctor is not helping you - don't stop until you find one who can. Be sure to get copies of all test and X Rays done already so you don't waste time having these things done again. Your best bet might be a chiropractic doctor.
Here are a few sites which might give you some insight to your problem:

Have blood tests run for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
They can test for the RA factor. Do you have pain in any other joints? You might also consider a chiropractor. I couldn't live without mine.
This may not be something you can do, but too much sitting from other pain makes my low back and hips hurt a great deal. We walk every evening and the walking really helps.
Try heat or Ice packs. I use 2 Excedrin and 2 Ibuprofen for inflammation every four or five hours, for mine. It helps enormously.
I use Asprcreme (if I am going out in public, no odor) and Icy Hot at home, it works better but has a powerful menthol odor. My husband says that's how he finds me in bed Ha ha ha!!!
Good Luck I certainly sympathize.

Physiotheraphy often helps...no matter what the problem is...it could be bursitis if you sit alot. Try walking more...just that action alone should help. If the pain shoots through your buttocks down the side of your hip down your leg that is sciatica...comes from the lower back really...but a physiotherapist will work wonders for you trust me.

Hopefully you saw an orthopedic doctor. They are your best bet in evaluating the pain after reading your x-rays. If the pain is so bad a hip replacement might be the answer.

I had it too. Found out it was due to too tight muscles. I thought that my chiropractor could help. He referred me to a physical therapist. The problem was due to a previous injury which caused the muscles to tense. Proper stretching, believe it or not, was the cure.
Sometimes my hip flexors still get tight. I purchased Denise Austin's pilates book and now have a variety of stretches to choose from....and no more pain!!

X-rays will only show problems with bony tissue such as arthritis or fractures. MRI or CT scan can rule out any soft tissue abnormality such as a tear in the labrum or an inflammed bursae. Referred or radicular pain from the spine often needs to be ruled out as well. Hip pain from the joint itself is most often characterized as groin pain...pain in the gluteal region is often referred from them spine, whereas pain at the "outside" most part of the hip is often related to soft tissue injury such as the bursitis or y-ligment.
Without knowing more of your symptoms or age, it is difficult to advise you. Physical therapy is defintely a good place to start.

Maybe you should see a nuerologist. Not everything can be seen in an x-ray-you may have nerver damage. Or you may suffer from some kind of bone density, or calcium deficiency. Good Luck hope this helps!

You might have bursitis in your hip. It can be fixed with a cortisone shot.
