Ok, don't worry...you're not helping me cheat or anything. This is just helping me answer the bigger question. I have to analyze passages and tell how they help communicate the major themes, symbols, conflicts and so on. We have to have five passages and I have two, but I'm running out of ideas. Thanks!

There are many different themes for this story, but the main theme I derived from the story was the need for repayment (also known as a wergild). Grendel's mother wanted revenge for her sons death, a life for a life, Grendel wanted repayment for his torture, and Beowulf is repaid for his dead man with treasures.

There are many other themes derived from the epic, some themes come across different for others, some of these themes include:

Good over evil
Fight for what you beleive is right
Never give up on your values

While I have not had the opportunity to read the Beowulf epic, I did recently see the new Canadian film version that was released on dvd earlier this summer. The director tried to make it as close to the original story as possible.

During the press conferences and various interviews for the film, the actors and director mentioned that the main themes of the story included racial tolerance and religious tolerance (or lack of).

Hope this helps somewhat.
