Your friend is right in the sense that they will grow new legs...

But it might hurt them at first because they do have nerves...

I have never been able to get a straight answer on this from a crab...

Yes...yes it does. Your friend is either lying, ignorant or likes to make leg plucking a legitimate activity.

The Institute for Laboratory Animal Research states that most/all invertebrate animals know what they don't like in the environment... 'Noxious' stuff. Like pain.
http://dels.nas.edu/ilar_n/ilarjournal/33_1_2/V33_1_2Question.shtml

"Most, if not all, invertebrates have the capacity to detect and respond to noxious or aversive stimuli. That is, like vertebrates, they are capable of "nociception." Examples of aversive stimuli include changes in temperature beyond the animal's normal range, contact with noxious chemicals, mechanical interference, or electric shock. Under certain conditions, all of these might be expected to cause pain in humans. In general, invertebrates, like vertebrates, respond to such stimuli by withdrawing or escaping so as to reduce the likelihood that they will be damaged by the noxious conditions."

And...a random point that I just have to state...the invertebrate that is protected under British Animal ethics is in fact none other than the octopus. It has quite a developed nervous system. :)

If your worried I heard putting a lobster in the freezer for a few makes it go in a deep sleep so it does screech bloody murder when you stick it in the boiling water,I assume the same would work for a crab.

Yeah, don't you hear their pitiful screams. You're so kind, plucking the legs off of innocent crabs.

Yes, it does hurt them. There have been scientific studies where they were hooked up with monitors and various experiments were performed on them, and they responded in a "painlike" manner when losing limbs.

I don't know if it'll hurt it or not, but did you know they can let go of their limbs if they feel it's the only way they can get away from predators like... say... sadistic children?
