it seems like holidays are driven around greedy corporations, trying to make you buy things so they can make more money... example.... valentines day, christmans, 4th of july, halloween, etc.etc.....

Most definitely; you have a holiday for every little thing. Especially the presidents; one for almost all of them lol; and then a presidents day also. DANG

Yes and no.... Almost all the holidays are too commercialized now. Some of the holidays are just an excuse to get off work, because Americans generally work more days per year than the rest of the world. Why else would they change some of the days we 'celebrate' the holiday to Monday? The true meaning of many of the holidays have been lost to the almighty dollar. The same is true for some holidays in the rest of the world. In Japan, they used to have Boy's Day, but they changed it to Children's day, to be politically correct. Mother's Day was promoted by the card manufacturers to get people to buy more cards. Valentine's Day, need I say more.

They have become over-rated as even the ads for holidays are there to lure in customers for taking advantage of cheap priced holiday gift items so the more they buy the more corporations can sell their goods. The holiday time is a great business time.

Over-rated? no. Has the history behind them been forgotten and are they now used as nothing more than an excuse for sales and a reason to go shopping because it's been turned into a commercial day, not a holiday? Absolutely

It depends on who ask.. In America we celebrate Freedom, Religion, Founders, and other historical figures that made this country the way it is.. What about Canada or Mexico? Are there holidays over rated. Look at Cinco De Mayo... Its not United States holiday yet MILLIONS in the U.S. still celebrate it... and how many Independents day does Mexico have..... So again I would say NO.

Of course many holidays are based off of religious beliefs or tradition but yes they are becoming a big corporate scheme.

I'm also just puking my guts out when I see Christmas stuff in stores in the middle of the summer. That's just dumb even if they are trying to trick you into thinking it's colder than it actually is.

I personally do not think so. I think we need to get back into putting more effort toward the holidays. Every year people are getting depressed over the holidays because of the rising cost of the economy and they can not afford the things for their kids/families. We need to kick Bush out and get someone who cares for the American people.

Take care.

That depends on what holidays your are referring to. If you mean Christmas, you can't "over-rate" Jesus's birthday. If you mean Thanksgiving, you can't "over-rate" the first colonists celebrating their new home. If you mean Passover, you cannot "over-rate" Jesus resurrecting.

Maybe Valentines Day is over-rated, Hallmark has turned that into a multimillion dollar holiday.

I think we forget how to celebrate a give holiday, we have lost a certain culture connection that binds us to one another as a community of citizens and peers.

They're not over rated, just over commercialized. It's so sickening, too! Like you can't even enjoy Thanksgiving because people have to go camp outside of WalMart and then trample each other to get to the latest kid craze.
