because the majority of americans have the cognative reasoning skills of 10 year old children(with ADHD and no pills). the US media conditions them to think in those terms, red team and blue team. their team is the good team and everything they do is right, and the other team is the bad guys and everything they do is wrong. they swear allegance to either of these 2 camps rather than to the constitution of the US and to liberty. this is a shame. I am an american and i think it is a shame. my blue and red countrymen are idiots. they are so blinded by the media blame of one team or the other that they don't see that both teams limit our freedom in different ways, each encroaching from a different direction. eventually we will have no freedom.

I think Ronald Regan really got it going. He helped define liberal and gave it a pretty negative tone. Talk radio has popularized it as well and continued to hone the definition of both. I like how these macho studs depict their imaginary liberal enemies as wimps. Funny how you never meet any people with the views they describe on these shows. Maybe it's because they twist facts, distort views and take everything out of context. I can't stand deception from anyone - Democrat or Republican. They choose the callers well to support their points. I here mostly right leaning shows, but I'm sure the left would do the same. It's easier to see things in black and white - just put the brain on auto pilot and march lock step. Must be nice to have all the answers and viewpoints in a guidebook ;-) I can't call myself a liberal or a conservative. I believe issues and ideas should be judged individually on their own merit. These generalizations and labels don't help this country too much. Right you true patriots out there?;-)

I like the Philosopher's answer, to a point.

I don't know if we're headed toward Big Brother-like freedom restrictions, as he implies in tone.

But I do think it's unfortunate that politics (among many things) are viewed by the masses and portrayed in the media as a black-and-white concept. That certainly is a disturbing habit to get into. Debating the rights and wrongs of each party can be interesting and has the potential to build an "agree to disagree" mutual respect between opposing sides of the fence. However, IMHO, the debating typically becomes bickering and the disagreements lead to distrust and "us against them" divisiveness.

Good question.
