You can do direct deposit into either a check or savings account or in some cases both. They are asking for a canceled check to get the routing number and account number. If you want your funds to go into a savings account, you need to ask the bank what number they use for savings account routing numbers (it may differ from check routing numbers). If you get the numbers right, you don't have to provide a voided check.

attach a deposit slip for the checking account information and a deposit slip for the savings account information. You can even tell the company doing the direct deposit, how much you want deposited in each. Usually, the company only accepts exact figures ($100 to savings, remainder to checking) because with percentages you get weird numbers (20% can equal $13.3485726).
