It has happened more times than I can count. It is the same with the tech saying your baby is a girl and surprise-------you have decorated and bought everything in pink--------It is a BOY. Anything is possible.

If you had a transvaginal ultrasound performed by a ultrasonographer, and saw just one baby, you are having just one. If your ultrasound was done early enough that you cannot see the fetus at all, it is possible that there are two....it is just too early to visualize. But if one baby was clearly visible, then there is only one. Years ago, ultrasound was in its infancy, but ultrasound image quality has really improved over the years. One baby cannot "hide" behind another, because ultrasound gives us transectional images (they are slices). I would say that a person who is unexperienced and not fully trained in ultrasound could miss a twin pregnancy. Here are some sites with ultrasound images of twin pregnancies. Check them out, and you can see how difficult it would be to miss a twin pregnancy.

It can happen with a normal ultra sound too. I know someone that did not know that they were having twins until she got to the hospital to give birth. All of her ultra sounds that she had never detected the other and the heartbeat was good and strong on both babies.

Serously, when it comes to babies...anything is possible! I'm wondering why you would ask? Do you think you're PG with twins?

It happened more often 20 years ago (to me and my twin, actually) , but not now. They've gotten much better at it. Very low odds.

Sometimes one will hide behind the other so it might look like there is only one.
