I want to be able to see how my own site statistics compare to others of a similar age/in a similar industry etc.

A rough yardstick is Alexa traffic rankings (http://www.alexa.com) which uses data culled from people using the Alexa web toolbar.
But if your site isn't really established very well Alexa will likely not have any information on it, so it's of limited use. It also won't give you exact figures and the demographics will be skewed (naturally).
Still, it's your best shot, short of asking the people who own the websites in question!
