No. Apparently they are based on sailor's stories of dugongs or manatees, which like humans have female breasts at the front and top, and the vagina in the same place. Desperate sailors are said to have humped these unfortunate creatures after years at sea without a woman (they are extremely docile and loll around in shallow water).

Ghastly thought!

Are "areal" mermaids a certain kind of mermaid. I only know about the regular ones with the flowing hair, seashell bra and fish tail. What do Areal Mermaids look like?

The story about mermaids and mermen are just legends made up by lonely sailors on long cruises. They missed being with their women so much that the must have seen large fish and they made up the story.

They were believed to sing songs to the sailors until they died, and there were legends of them squeezing the life out of sailors who fell overboard.

You will see a fairly complete article about mermaids at the web site address below.

sure they are real honey.. they ride around on dragons backs when we are not looking and if you kiss one, you can live happily ever after with her under the sea. Perhaps you should start walking into the water and see if you can find one. Remember that they live a long way out and so dont give up when the tide reaches your neck keep going

They are not real. You should watch Splash.
That was a cute older movie with Tom Hanks and a mermaid.

You Know... Mermaids are legends, but if you feel as if you need to believe in them to protect your own mental stability, more power to you.

They were apparently spotted by sailors, but the 'mermaids' were actually sirenia, manatees or 'sea cows'.
