Just for fun, I'll add my two cents,,,which by the way in 1900 was a decent amount of money. I'm not quite that old, but I do recall penny candy, and 10 cents a gallon gasoline, and 25 cent all day Saturday movies, and, and, and.
I bought a home in the early 70's, brand new, about 1200 sq. ft. decent, for 18,000. I researched the abstract and found that at the turn of that century, the land was sold for $1.75 per acre, and most home building in rural areas was DIY. Inner city housing was a bit more than a penny on todays dollar, but not much. The person who answered $10,000,,, was talking about a mansion in 1900. My parents bought their last home in 1948 for less.
In the early 1900's my grandfather bought a farm in upstate NY; house, barns, and 100 acres with a lake, pond, and creek on property, for less than a mid sized car costs today.
Comparisons can be depressing, but keep in mind the economy and how all the factors that drive it,,,change.
If I had a dime for every nickle I've ever spent, I'd have less saved than what I spent.

In 1908 you could buy a house through the Sears catalog for under $1,000. That didn't include the cost of land.

Lactose loose milks, soy cheeses and ingredients, $1500 3 hundred and sixty 5 days...because i've got hit $17k i will end there.
