that can be a confusing to a guitar player. Steel guitar is a differnt type of guitar entirely. It's mainly used in country to get some twangy bends. However i think you're talking about strings. Steel stings sound much much better but need to be warn down a little because they're stiff at first. Nylon though sounds like crap and they wear down easily. I would go with steel. Not only that if you clean off steel strings then they can last a LONG time. Most people don't clean strings though.

Only in appearance.

Assuming you mean non electric guitars;

Some are made for Nylon strings only and must not be fitted with steel strings. They have a slightly softer sound and are the favorite of most 1960's folk music singers.
The Nylon only guitars usually have a wider neck at the top so there is more room between the strings. The nylon strings are wider and easier on the fingers of a beginner.

The guitar that can use steel stings could use nylon if you wish, but the strings are a bit thicker and might be hard to keep fingers from buzzing on the neighboring strings.

Electrified guitars all have steel strings and have even been called Steel guitars. They use electricity to amplify the sound made by the strings.

An acoustic guitar (non-electric) can be fitted with an electric pickup if desired. I can remember when Bob Dylan one of the most famous folk singers of the 1960's showed up with an electrified acoustic guitar and the purists thought he had betrayed them!! The crowd actually booed him!!

If I remember right that was July of 1965.

Their tone is very different... However, the steel ones will hurt your fingers more if you're just starting out & don't have callouses yet... That is, assuming you're playing an acoustic guitar...
If you get a decent, cheap electric - say, a Fender Squier strat or tele - you'll be able to play much longer without the pain...

Steal sounds better, but I think for girls it's better to start out with nylon because you don't have to have really strong hands to press the strings down!
