1. what causes mold?

well mold is actually a microorganism. It grows on surfaces kind of like bacteria does. It reproduces by creating spores and releases them like flowers release pollen. The spores land on a surface and if the environment is right, the spores turn into mold. Most mold like moist environments. Not all molds are green. Some are black, some are red, white, blue, orange just to name some colors. Not all molds feel like a sponge. Some molds are hard, some molds are liquidy. When you eat blue cheese you are eating a mold. (the blue part is mold)

Yeasts are unicelled organisms. They are a special type of fungii with the ability to ferment. Thats how you get beer and yogurt and stuff.

Mold is a type of fungus. It's not always green. You can have blue mold, white mold, black mold, etc. Some of them are even good to eat. (Blue cheese)
Mold feels spongy because it's not a solid mass, but a colony of mold mycelia, which does resemble a sponge when you look at it under magnification.

Yeast is an organizm that's closely related to mold, being a fungus itself.
